Heroes TV reboot joined by console and mobile games

Heroes Reborn, the reboot of NBC’s live-action superhero series, will be accompanied by the release of a mobile game called Heroes Reborn: Enigma and a current-generation console and PC game called Heroes Reborn: Gemini. Both will be developed by Chicago-based game studio Phosphor and teased at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 12.

The original television series, Heroes, ran from 2006 until its cancellation in 2010. The reboot, featuring previous cast members including Masi Oka as Hiro Nakamura, will premiere Sept. 24 — nearly 9 years to the day of the original broadcast.

Enigma, built for both phones and tablets, will be a first-person action-puzzle game. Players will follow an evolved human character named Dahlia as she tries to escape from a secret government facility called The Quarry.

Gemini, destined for consoles as well as Mac and Windows PC, will follow Cassandra, “a young woman who is determined to solve the mysteries of her past while discovering her new powers,” a press release states.

“Both games can be played and enjoyed separately,” the statement continues, “but share key characters, story points and gameplay dynamics, creating a richer experience for those who play both games.”

The story for both games comes from series creator Tim Kring. Additionally, both games were created using Unreal Engine 4.

Heroes Reborn has been teased a few times, but this is the first full trailer of NBC’s return to the world of Heroes.

Here’s the full plot synopsis, direct from NBC:

Heroes Reborn — From original creator Tim Kring, the supernatural phenomenon begins again with a fresh crop of inspiring heroes who take on the ultimate struggle between those with extraordinary abilities and those with nefarious motives to hunt and harness their powers. Epic adventures await these newly empowered allies as they cross paths with some of the original characters (such as the beloved “HRG” and fan-favorite time-traveler Hiro Nakamura), unlocking the mysterious fate of the universe and their place within it. The cast of “Heroes Reborn” includes Jack Coleman, Zachary Levi, Masi Oka, Judith Shekoni, Robbie Kay, Henry Zebrowski, Kiki Sukezane, Ryan Guzman, Danika Yarosh, Toru Uchikado, Eve Harlow and Gatlin Green. Tim Kring serves as writer and executive producer. Peter Elkoff and James Middleton also executive produce. “Heroes Reborn” is produced by Universal Television, Imperative Entertainment and Tailwind Productions.

So what do we think? Has there been enough time to remember the first season while forgetting all the dreck that came afterwards? The trailer doesn’t do much to sell the show, and relies heavily on nostalgia for the original … which may not be the wisest strategy.

Heroes Reborn will air on Thursdays from 8 to 9 p.m. this fall.
